GRACE SLICK/PAUL KANTNER Sunfighter RARE UK PRESS+BOOK. End price: GBP 31 End date: 2010-08-08 Start price: GBP 14 Start date: 2010-08-01 Number of bids: 8 Auctioned at: ebay Country: Great Britain ONEADAYRECORDS – Delivering Quality Music to the World Please see my Detailed Packing Description Further Down with Picture & All Shipping Rates. Artist or Band: GRACE SLICK and PAUL KANTNER Album Title: Sunfighter. Producer(s): Paul Kantner and Grace Slick. TRACK LIST: Side 1: Silver Spoon; Diana; Sunfighter; Titanic; Look at the Wood; When I Was a Boy I Watched the Wolves. Side 2: Million; China; Earth Mother; Diana 2; Universal Copernican Mumbles; Holding Together. Label/Format: Grunt – a UK pressing on very substantial weight vinyl with matt finish. This label is well known for very thin pressings, often on Dynaflex, especially the US versions (Please see my label scan). Label Conditions: Both practically like new: very clean, fresh and attractive with only one ultra light and faint spindle trace on side two, and struggling to find any on side one. This record played once and looking practically as made. Cat Number: FTR 1002. Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm. Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks. Weight of this Record: 150 grams. An almost unheard of weight for Grunt. This is almost a freak pressing. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras. Country of Manufacture: England. Rarity: Quite rare as a UK pressing and this includes the highly elusive book. Most found are US imports with US thick card, wear-prone covers, wafer thin Dynaflex record and no book. I cannot remember ever finding this UK complete set before, this too with a record played just once and a little-worn cover. The book fully intact and attractive too. Do not under-estimate just how elusive this one is, as most seen here are imported, it suggests few of these were even pressed here. Original Year of Release: 1971 Matrix Nos: APRS 8713-2E / APRS 8714-2E Mother & Stamper Codes: A1 Y / A1 C Musicians: Paul Kantner – vocals, rhythm guitar; Grace Slick – vocals, piano; Jack Traylor – guitar, vocals; Jerry Garcia – guitar; Papa John Creach – electric violin; Craig Chaquico – lead guitar; Bill Laudner – vocals; Jack Casady – bass; Spencer Dryden – drums; David Crosby – vocals, tambourine; Jorma Kaukonen – lead guitar; Graham Nash – Arp, vocals; Chris Wing – drums; Pat Gleeson – Moog, piano; John Vierra – synthesiser, keyboards; Phil Sawyer – sound effects on ‘Titanic’; Peter Kaukonen – guitar, mandolin; Shelley Silverman – drums; Joey Covington – drums; Steven Schuster – flute, saxophone, horn arrangements; Tower of Power (Greg Adams, Mic Gillette) – horns. Brief Info: The second album issued on the new Grunt (part of RCA) records just after the ‘Bark’ album. The two principal members of Jefferson Airplane are joined by the rest of the band and a host of other famous musicians of the era (as seen above). It very much carries forward the JA sound and is a real gem of an album, so often under-appreciated here. This was not a big seller and it’s much harder to find than most of their others. One of the very few copies I have seen that includes the rare lyric book (US printed, I think all were) and finding a complete UK pressing is never to be taken for granted as most were imported US pressings. Some almost bizarre and typically uncompromising lyrics, this is a strong album. The song ‘China’ is about the artists’ daughter as seen on the cover and book. A copy so clean and unused, I can never imagine finding another one like it again, it’s taken me years just to find this one. The fairly typical low-fi JA production is again evident but a better, cleaner copy will not be seen or heard, this record is exactly as made and will delight fans of this wonderful band. This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+: based on the far more common US version, rarely seen devoid of major rubbing and ringwear. This much more elusive UK-made version will prove slightly more resilient, but I can imagine most will still be rubbed, grubby and ringworn. Apart from some relatively minor edge rubs, this is a beauty as I hope my pictures show. Cover Grade and Format: EX and for a cover this unforgiving, I think a (+) is appropriate. An unlaminated gatefold format. Printed and made in England by Howard’s Printers and including the rare book which IS printed in the USA. I feel as sure as I can be, no UK printed covers were made (unless somewhat proves to me otherwise). Cover Front: One of rock’s most beautiful covers: rarely seen in worthy condition to really enjoy, this bucks-the-trend big-time and looks fabulous. The baby is China Kantner, the artists’ daughter for which one song is about. This is vibrant and richly coloured and not faded, rubbed and tired looking like most of the more common US versions. A few faint and very light surface marks but clean and uncreased, this front has more than withstood the ravages of time and any mistreatments and the long wait to find an available example has been worth it. Cover Back: Dark and with a 150 gram LP inside, most would expect some moderate or even heavy ringwear, but no. Any traces are ultra fine and faint as are any tiny edge creases. A back to more than complement the gorgeous front, this will also take some beating. Cover Inner Gatefold: The only blemishes on this centrefold are a tiny few chips on the left edge. That apart, little else to fault on such a dark inside. A very surreal, almost psychedelic graphic too. Top Edges: One very small chip on the back edge, little else and both very straight. Bottom Edges: Light rubbing, more moderate near the corners. Right Edge(s), and Type: The sealed left edge has rubbed with two or three chips. The back opening edge has little wear and most is sharp with no feathering or trimming. Odd tiny burr trace only. Spine and Text: A super spine that has survived almost unscathed. Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. Just one tiny chip only that has just clipped to the top of the ‘T’ in ‘SUNFIGHTER’. All other text is perfect and unworn and the artwork is practically unworn and clean up to the ends. Corners: All corners have rubbed, mostly fairly lightly but a little more on bottom right and top left. Very fine shape is retained to make them look neat. Cover Summary: A very strong and unusually attractive all round example of this clearly wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. UK-made ones are elusive and the number of US imports seen reitterate few were even made. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors. The Inner: The RCA unlined white inner is included. This has some creasing to the bottom corners and a small price sticker removal pull. But clean and intact. The Book: EX, this being very critical, all the inner pages are in superb condition. This 16-page book (side can be seen against the cover), was printed in the United States and I think all were, but that is an educated guess and not a definitive statement. I have never seen a UK book anyway. Only slightly marked down because the two original staples are tarnished, clearly not made with galvanised wire. But both are solid and unstressed or loosened. The front cover has a tiny faint stain on thte China’s shoulder area (but look hard). A few ultra small and faint thumb ruffles on the front cover only show under light and there are no tears. The same on the back cover with a few fine creases near the top. All pages are very clean and crisp, there are line drawings and all the lyrics are printed. The book style is very similar to the one in ‘Blows Against the Empire’ and this one is very nice indeed and it makes a fine change to be able to offer one. Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) and little short of full Mint. A supreme visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and unusually heavily pressed. Grunt records are well-known to be made wafer thin, and I state again, this is almost a freak pressing on this label. A copy now played just twice after my sound check which proved to be exceptional. Visually a superb record that should please all collectors. Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.] Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This truly outstanding record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is as good as it will ever be, but is typically an average recording in terms of high fidelity sound, fans of this band will know what I mean. Any surface sounds are minuscule and barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this heavyweight pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has hardly been played and has largely been well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, still such an under-appreciated gem in my opinion. This record will prove nigh-in impossible to find better and can be strongly recommended, certainly one for the serious JA fan. Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can all items I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to help any potential bidder and collector. You may notice I only submit records sparingly on Ebay - on average ONEADAY, a couple more at weekends if time permits, hence the name - time rarely allows for more as I Play-Grade virtually every record I offer in their entirety, not just bits to guess a grade - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story. I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested collector – I am very fussy and my buyers have the right to be too. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee total accuracy for colours however but most will be very close. If any picture I take looks more flattering than the actual item for any reason, I will clearly state the fact in the advert and vice-versa. I hope the item below is to your liking - any questions can be emailed and I will do my very best to answer you. I am enthusiastic, and have a fair degree of knowledge about many genres and I promise quality items - bid with confidence - excellence comes as standard and so does Near Mint regularly. Please assume all records I offer have NO jumps, sticks, warps or writing on covers or labels unless clearly stated to the contrary. Thanks for your interest and Good luck – MIKE. Equipment Used for Play-Grading: I now play-grade ALL the records I offer (unless clearly stated to the contrary) on the following equipment: Deck: Linn LP12/Hercules/Cirkus with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Rondo Red moving coil cartridge (tracks at 2 grams). Amps: Naim Nait 5i with Project USB phono stage and Chord interconnects. Speakers: B&W 704 Floorstanding 3-way Monitors (bi-wired with QED Silver terminated cable). All records I offer on Ebay are cleaned on a professional Moth vacuum machine before play-grading for the cleanest and best possible sound and will include a brand new lined inner and protective cover too. First-time, zero-rated bidders, who do not ask permission to bid, will be cancelled immediately and blocked – NO exceptions. For winning bidders who I consider excessively slow to make contact or submit payment, I will use my right to block future bids. If any bidder who wins in the final seconds is present to do so, surely they can at least email me to inform of intention and payment method? If swift or promp payment is a problem, please do not bid. PACKING - THIS IS WHAT YOU GET - PLEASE SEE MY TYPICAL PACKING BOX PICTURE. What You Get: To confirm to the strict Ebay rules on shipping, I must now send ALL my packets ‘Signed-For’ with NO exceptions. Both buyers and sellers want their packets to have a safer journey and this is not a bad thing. I now offer the fastest possible posting, often the very next day after payment is received or within two to three days maximum (unless on holiday). I only use FIRST-CLASS Mail. The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my Moth Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional thick boxes (NOT Mailers or Cruciforms, these do not offer maximum protection). The record(s) REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with THREE or EVEN FOUR ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. The thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. Printed address labels are used for clarity as well as a sender label. Customers requests or special needs for P&P will be respected if at all possible but ‘Signed-For’ posting is NOT an option anymore. Please see my picture of a typical finished box packet that will now be used on ALL transactions as from now. I do not profit on posting and the cost of this lavish packing is NOT even charged for, I offer probably the best-value and safest shipping possible for ultimate confidence. These boxes and ultra thick double-wall stiffners and bubble wrap make a near impregnable fortress for safe shipping and this is used inland and overseas for ALL my records, not just the rare and expensive. I will invoice any winning bidder as soon as possible after the auction ends. My ‘loss’ or ‘damage rate’ is less than one in two thousand based on over 6,000+ items sold in over 8 years of Ebay trading and I consider that pretty exceptional. The only damage rate acceptable for this seller is ZERO and I think my packets will offer just that. It would take a vicious postman or postal service to damage these for sure. Even one of these stiffners cannot be bent by hand, so what chance 3 or 4 inside a box? Oneadayrecords is a MAILER-FREE ZONE. I discount of course for multiple purchases with a maximum of FOUR records per box (one double can sometimes be included subject to total weight). I will not respond to questions on shipping costs as all the details are included here and on ALL of my adverts. Details below: NOTE: First Time Bidders: I will cancel ALL first-time bidders with no feedbacks or excessive negatives who do not ask me if its OK to bid first – NO EXCEPTIONS. Please Note: I will now offer any item to the runner-up after the mandatory Ebay 3 days if no contact is made by the winning bidder unless prior notice of any delay is given beforehand. The same applies if no payment is received within the mandatory 7 days so any bidder who has just lost out can still email me to reserve the item as priority second chance – it’s always worth asking. I will not refund if any defect detail is clearly stated on the advert and missed by the buyer, so read the item description carefully. If any overseas collector does not understand anything in my listing, please email and ask me to help. Thank You. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course. The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.

ONEADAYRECORDS – Delivering Quality Music to the World. Artist or Band: PAUL KANTNER Jefferson Starship Album Title: Blows Against the Empire. Producer(s): Paul Kantner. TRACK LIST: Side 1: Mau Mau; The Baby Tree; Let’s Go Together; A Child is Coming. Side 2: Sunrise; Hijack; Home; Have You Seen the Stars Tonite; XM; Starship. Label/Format: RCA Victor – Rare original intense orange format with glossy, super smooth surfaces (Please see my label scan). Label Conditions: Both immaculate: ultra clean with no spindle marks to be seen. This pair are as fresh and clean as new. It’s more than a strong possibility this record was unplayed. It’s again from the DJ collection recently acquired. This pair have to be seen. Cat Number: SF 8163. Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm. Weight of this Record: 130 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still). Country of Manufacture: England. Rarity: Any copy in this condition and including the elusive book is pretty hard to find. This album would not have sold in great numbers and this is the ultimate, very first UK pressing with the super-rare -1E/-1E matrix numbers. The sound quality is flawless and must be one of the best pressed and quietest I have yet heard. My play-grade was possibly the first time, the owner acquired albums and sometimes they never even left the covers. I would be certain this record has not seen daylight for years. The cover on this is rarely found devoid of ringwear and major rubbing and even if the book is inside, it’s so often in poor condition. It’s a real delicate one made from ultra soft paper with all pages textured, yes that’s right, textured. Here the cover is in very fine condition and the fragile book has aged little. The record sounds fantastic and must be the very best sounding example I have ever heard - just as you would expect from a very first pressing. Original Year of Release: 1971 Matrix Nos: ZPRS-9053-1E / ZPRS-9054-1E Stampers: A1A / A1B Musicians: Paul Kantner; Grace Slick; Jerry Garcia; Bill Kreutzmann; Mickey Hart; Joey Covington; Jack Casady; David Crosby; Graham Nash; David Freiberg; Harvey Brooks; Peter Kaukonen; Phil Sawyer; Bill Thompson; Ron Dudley. Brief Info: Issued after the demise of Jefferson Airplane and the first album to carry the Jefferson Starship name but not strictly speaking a Jefferson Starship album proper. This was a transitional album that included a host of high quality West Coast musicians. Recorded around the same time as Dave Crosby’s classic album If I Could Only Remember My Name, many of the guests on that memorable album appear here too. Former airplane members including major contributions from Grace Slick are present and also most the Grateful Dead. Formed around Kantner’s fascination of science fiction, this is a sci-fi concept album about the hijacking of a starship. A surreal trip is in store for the winning bidder, the new Starship took off here but does not sound like the commercial band they later became. For fans of the early Jefferson Airplane sound, this will appeal far more than their later albums, this remains one of the most underrated albums of its year and deserves to be heard again soon. -1E/-1E copies of this were not available very long and very would have been pressed with these matrixes. This was probably sent to the owner direct from the factory. This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+ Cover Grade and Format: EX+ an unlaminated gatefold format that was printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. Includes the elusive illustrated lyric book. Cover Front: The front looks fantastic and never underestimate how hard this cover is find like this. Dark unprotected ink, the biggest recipe for rubbing and ring marks but this has largely been avoided and this will be very hard to find better. Any rub traces are tiny and faint with just a trace near the top and bottom edges. The only really noteworthy crease is on the top right corner tip, not bad for a cover this great age. The artwork is beautiful and is near flawless with no fading or marks. So often this suffers sticker pulls and tears, this has no traces whatsoever probably because it never made it to the shops. Cover Back: The back is nice too with just a mildish ring arc at the very top and bottom. Even the later pressings with much thinner vinyl inside suffer ringwear, so what chance this with a thicker heavier record inside? The last one of these I offered weighed less than 100 grams and still had an early matrix (-3E), only the 1971 pressings had more substantial weight. The odd small rub trace or surface blemish if viewed up close, but this back has avoided creasing and the artwork looks lovely. Cover Inner Gatefold: Practically perfect and looking quite magnificent. The odd small cornertip crease only. Top & Bottom Edges: The top pair have little wear, odd light rub traces only. The bottom front is similar but the back has moderate rubbing as it’s the resting edge that is slightly proud of the other. Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering. Record entered on this right outside back edge. Spine and Text: The spine is in great shape with minimal traces of any wear. Solid and thick, straight, uncompressed and very close to square, both right edges meet up very closely together and near parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and never take this for granted on such a vulnerable dark cover. Corners: A tip crease top right reciprocated on the back. Light corner rubs only given just how prone this will be. Fine shape is retained. Cover Summary: A very fine all round example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please a high percentage of collectors. The Lyric Book: Mint(-), and in wonderful condition considering just how delicate this is. An 8-page booklet with all the lyrics printed and some very bizarre illustrations (see a few close-ups). Made from incredibly soft textured paper, this has survived it’s long years in very fine shape. No creasing and all pages look neat and clean with a fine freshness retained - an ultra faint and small stain on the front near the bottom edge but look very hard to see it. No ageing or tone spots, this has been kept inside the cover and again, when was the last time this saw daylight? No splits or tears and both the original staples are rock solid with no pulling or stresses, absolutely as made with no tarnishing or rusting. So often missing or very tatty, this is a quality example and quite frankly no copy of this album is anything like complete without it. The song lyrics are all included with more fasinating artwork. Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: I cannot grade what was possibily an unplayed record as Mint(-) as I really should because it has some minor and faint transit friction rubs when viewed under light, totally superficial and with NO effect on play whatsoever. I think most collectors will know what I mean and putting a definitive grading on this record is difficult and subjective. Possibly like this on arrival and with pristine sound it’s a Mint(-) record in all but critical viewing. More substantially pressed and the earliest ever issued and the best and quietest pressing I have yet heard. A very fine visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy played no more than once or twice including my play-grade. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again. Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.] Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This genuine first pressed record plays perfectly with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a fine dynamic range and well detailed sound. Not a hi-fi classic I guess but the music does the talking, it has the typical early Jefferson Airplane sound. Devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a title that does have some quiet passages. Few copies will match or outperform this -1E/-1E 1971 pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Equipment Used for Play-Grading: I now play-grade ALL the records I offer (unless clearly stated to the contrary) on the following equipment: Deck: Linn LP12 with Ittok Mk IV arm and Ortofon Samba Moving Coil cartridge (tracks at 1.8 grams). Amps: Naim Nait 5i with Project USB phono stage and Chord interconnects. Speakers: B&W 704 Floorstanding 3-way Monitors (bi-wired). POSTING & PACKING: What You Get: I now offer the fastest possible posting, mostly the very next day after payment is received or within 48 hours maximum. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT mailers) with the record(s) REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with TWO thick stiffners for even extra protection. The cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW heavy duty soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my Moth Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. Printed address labels are used for clarity and well as sender label. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. Customers requests or special needs for P&P will be respected if at all possible but NOT surface mail abroad. I never make profit on posting and offer probably the best-value and safest shipping possible. I will invoice any winning bidder as soon as possible after the auction ends, with the total costs including ‘standard’ or ‘optional extra insurance’ P&P – ALL UK and Russian packets go out non-negotiable Recorded Delivery. My ‘loss’ or ‘damage rate’ is less than 0.1 per percent based on over 4,000+ items sold in over 7 years of Ebay trading and I consider that pretty exceptional. PLEASE NOTE: I will now only send packets to Russia with Recorded Delivery at a cost of £7 per single LP. If this is unacceptable to Russian collectors, please do not bid. I only want my records to arrive safely and this gives packets a better chance to do so. Also ALL UK packets will be sent with either Recorded or Special Delivery as standard (both have to be signed for). All shipping costs and rules can be found after my description. If they are not acceptable, please do not bid. NOTE: First Time Bidders: I will cancel ALL first-time bidders with no feedbacks or excessive negatives who do not ask me if its OK to bid first – NO EXCEPTIONS. SHIPPING COSTS & OPTIONS: Posting & Packing: UK & CHANNEL ISLANDS all now sent Recorded Delivery: 1 LP (First Class Recorded Delivery with Standard Royal Mail Insurance) [Signed For] = £4 (OPTIONAL). 1 LP (Special Delivery with Standard £500 Maximum Insurance) [Signed For, Next Day] = £7 (OPTIONAL). Payment Conditions: I prefer PayPal or cheque from UK winning bidders. I can accept PayPal from overseas bidders. The customer can choose their method of shipping with the exception of second class or surface mail overseas – these I will NOT use. The winner bidder chooses his/her posting method and if uninsured is chosen, its their decision and they have to stick with it, I can accept no responsibility if an item is lost in the post. I can only try to claim at standard levels if no enhancement is chosen (£39). Potential Bidders: Please do not bid if you have negative feedback unless checking first, I will cancel any bids I feel are timewasters. A maximum 3 days for communication and 7 days for payment to arrive - if not I will relist the item or offer to the runner-up. Fast deals get great feedback from me. Any questions - please ask and thanks for looking. My Guarantee: If any winning bidder is not satisfied with their purchase I will offer a complete refund minus the Posting and All Ebay costs as long as the item detail has been read and understood. I will not refund if any defect detail is clearly stated on the advert and missed by the buyer. If any overseas collector does not understand anything in my listing, please email and ask me to help.

Hi, I am Mike, I am 46 and have been a music collector and enthusiast for over 33 years now. We all wish we could turn back the clock and buy those wonderful brand new records from the 60s and 70s, but alas, this is not possible; so I always try to offer the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. No vinyl/music lover really would choose to buy second-hand, but this is only way now to own these valuable, prized and ellusive items now. You may notice I only submit records sparingly on Ebay - on average ONEADAY, hence the name - time rarely allows for more as I Play-Grade virtually every record I offer in their entirity, not just bits to guess a grade (on a Rega 3 deck with Ortofon cartridge) - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story - I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested reader – I am very fussy and my buyers have the right to be too. What you see is what you get. The only thing I cannot guarantee one hundred percent is exact colour matching - this depends on the lighting at the time and that is out of my control, but I feel sure most items will be very close to the actual real item. Variation can sometimes occur too in colour of the label scans and labels taken next to the sleeve with a digital camera, the scanned full label pictures should be the most accurate. If any picture I take looks more flattering than the actual item for any reason, I will clearly state the fact in the advert. I hope the item below is to your liking - any questions can be emailed and I will do my very best to answer you. I am enthusiastic , and have a fair degree of knowledge about many genres and I promise quality items - bid with confidence - excellence comes as standard and so does Near Mint regularly. Please assume all records I offer have NO jumps or sticks or writing on covers or labels unless clearly stated to the contrary. Thanks for your interest and Good luck – MIKE. Please Note: I will now offer any item to the runner-up after the mandatory Ebay 3 days if no contact is made by the winning bidder. The same applies if no payment is received within the mandatory 7 days so any bidder who has just lost out can still email me to reserve the item as priority second chance. Item wants are always welcome - email me with anything needed, you never know - I may just have a copy in stock. I by quality single items and collections also (Email me please if you have quality items for sale). Debutant Bidders: Many sellers refuse first time buyers: I do not follow this practice (everybody has to start somewhere), but I would appreciate any first timer letting me know their intentions of their intended payment method and very prompt communication, preferably before any bid or soon after the auctions ends. This gives confidence that their intentions are honourable, and I in return guarantee extra special good feedbacks to get zero rated Ebayers off to a flying start to help them with future transactions. NOTE: I WILL NOT ACCEPT BIDS FROM UNREGISTERED USERS, I will cancel them immediately, and sorry, I cannot give valuations on people’s personal items just for their own curiosity, no item can be accurately valued blindly. Please read all the information carefully - these adverts take an age to compile properly - so it’s well worth a few minutes of your time to read the details thoroughly. I really cannot take any responsibility if any bidder fails to read any facts that are clearly stated in the advert - Thankyou. Artist or Band: TRAFFIC Album Title: John Barleycorn Must Die Cat Number: ILPS 9116 Stereo (not issued in mono). Label and Condition: Island, stunning rich pink with i logo format. These labels have the smooth finish and look really lovely. Beautiful clean examples that show only very light spindle traces Its actually quite hard seeing any on side one, and side two isn’t easy either. Zero wear around the centre hole but side two has a few tiny blisters where the label has not adhered totally on manufacture. I emphasise small, maybe these can just be seen on a high resolution screen. This stunning copy looks little played and would be one of the cleanest copies of this album I have yet seen. (Please see label scans for all information needed). Country of Manufacture: England, UK Rarity: Scarce on this label, this has a double matrix also which I think is pretty scarce (more details on Matrix Nos below). Original Year of Release: 1970 Matrix Nos: ILPS 9116 A2 and B2. Also UAS 5504 A 6.3.70 and UAS 5504 B 6.3.70. Was this subcontracted to United Artists for pressing? If so it could be even scarcer I would think. Whatever they did a fine job, this is a heavyweight pressing and up the very high Island Pink standards. I would guess the 6.3.70 was the pressing date. Brief Artist & Album Info: NOTE: Please can I make it clear this album is NOT the same copy I sold some time ago on Ebay - its very similar overall, the only major difference is the labels on this copy are smoother, the conditions are amazing pretty much the same. Back to this copy: The final Traffic album to feature on this famous progressive full pink label and what a real beauty it is too. This is my second favourite album they made after the stunning psych debut. This has a more traditional feel to it, especially the classic traditional title track - but the material is quite mixed. Only six songs feature but all are superb, Traffic are now a three piece with Steve Winwood on organ, piano and percussion; Chris Wood on Sax, flute, electric sax and percussion and Jim Capaldi on drums and percussion. This without doubt is one the best examples of this mini classic I have ever seen. The E. J. Day cover is close to faultless and the record looks superb -the shine is lustrous - and plays wonderfully well. A tremendous copy and up to the high connoisseur standard. Cover Grade and Format: Mint (a term never use lightly, but I feel its totally justified on this extraordinary cover). I think this may be the only time I have ever dared put a ‘Mint’ grading on an unlaminated 60 that dates this far back, its just about faultless with a stunning fresh look and feel and if a better one exists I sure would like to see it. It’s gatefold format, very heavy card with that lovely rustic look and feel, just like it was meant too. Printed and made by the E. J. Day Group, London and Bedford. Absolute gem of a cover that more than does justice to the fine contents inside. Cover Front: Simplistic but as perfect as the get. No rubbing, creases or ringwear. Super clean and unmarked - the tiny fleck marks are all part of the design. No indentations or surface marks either, I really cannot imagine finding this cover front better. Cover Back: One of the very best examples I have ever seen for this back, this always seems to attract ringwear and rubbing but this one is pretty much perfect again. An astonishing sight to see. Cover Gatefold Inner: Simply age defying, stunning again. Top Edge: Unworn. Bottom Edge: Unworn. Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp and unworn. Record entered on right outside back edge. Spine and Text: Solid and square with no wear, text is near perfect and unworn. Corners: All four close to perfect (sorry to be repetitive, but this is incredible). A tiny tip crease on the top left if being hyper-critical and that’s just about as bad as any ‘wear’ gets on this astonishing sleeve. Cover Summary: This will never be found in better condition. Its serious collector territory and investment quality. Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-), and but for the odd light surface trace it too could have been almost mint visually too - a couple of circular press groove marks - a common sight on albums pressed this age. A superb copy that looks as clean and fresh as a just pressed copy. Super clean and shiny, and jet black and a very heavyweight pressing. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually a very nice record that should please all collectors again. Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This super record plays very close to its very high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, dynamic sound - this at times has the drive of a mono recording, all frequencies are generally sharp and clear, maybe, and this is being hyper-critical, the vaguest hint a high frequency clipping on the odd brief moment - my Rega reveals just about all and is super-critical of all details - I emphasise this is negligable and a 1970 pressed copy of this is unlikely to ever sound much better. Few if any pops or ticks from memory and a fine pressing, any surface sounds are minimal - at times a delicate recording with quiet moments - most play just that, the odd minor light surface sound maybe, but few. I feel very sure this record has been played little and has been well stored and looked after, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment - its a credit to the owner to keep a record and sleeve looking like this. Little, if anything spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this gem. This copy will prove near impossible to find significantly better. Mono vs Stereo, an overview: Always a matter of opinion which is better or more important. For any serious collector where there is a choice e.g. Beatles, Stones, Hendrix etc. both are essential. True Stereo albums give great imagery and presence whereas mono albums usually are more dynamic, louder and present the detail more clearly. Mono albums are far harder to find in genuinely top playing condition. Most were heavily played, particularly the truly great bands and artists, often covered in mark and scratches, many severe and labels that were a mass of spindle marks. The majority were played on vintage and unsubtle decks with heavy tonearms and thick styli (often sapphire, not diamond, that chipped more easily) that rendered heavy wear in a very short time to many a fine classic record. Wear to the delicate groove walls, particularly the innermost tracks to the labels were most vulnerable where the tracking angle became more severe and the backdrag actually stripped the delicate groove walls. This resulted in surface noise and mild/moderate distortion or worse. These old decks tracked by sheer weight and little of any refined engineering. Next time you see such a deck at a local record fayre, feel the weight of the arm, it almost makes you wonder how any records survived at all. The point of this paragraph is emphasise that when a truly clean, lightly played and great sounding 60s mono album (or stereo come to that) is offered, treasure it, because for sure they are truly getting vary rare and precious - beware - demand only play-graded records. As a general guide to rarity, mono was the far more common format from 61–65; Around 66–67 the balance was roughly equal, then from 68-69 the balance swung more to stereo, making monos from these dates far scarcer, even rare - this guide is important and effects values greatly. Track Listing: Glad; Freedom Rider; Empty Pages; Stranger to Himself; John Barleycorn; Every Mother’s Son. Album Played For Grading: Yes. Final Summary: A very highly respected band and album, this was critically well received on issue. Collectors of near mint Pink Island will have to go a long way to find a much better example than this - for sure the cover will never be bettered. This copy has been stored all its life in a plastic heavy duty protective cover and boy does it show. I doubt if this has seen light of day for 30 years. It will remind the buyer of what a brand new records and sleeves used to look like - stunning! – Mike. I'm starting to list a collection of about 200 lps and 45s put together by my wife between about 1969 and 1984. Few of these have been played more than 2 or 3 times as, generally, they were recorded to tape and then put away. About 75% are in Near Mint store bought condition and look as if they've just been purchased. They were usually bought within a few days of being issued so, not only are they in pristine condition, they're mostly first pressings. Plus the lps all have their original inner sleeves and any inserts. The collection has remained untouched in a cupboard at my wife's parents house since she moved out and got married in 1984. If I find any blemishes or faults with any of these records I will point them out. Even the slightest shelf wear is absent from many. If you require additional photos of anything please let me know. This is a copy of the LP John Barleycorn Must Die by Traffic, first UK pressing from 1970 on Island ILPS 8116. The matrix no.s are Side One ILPS 8116 A / 2 UAS 5504 A and Side Two ILPS 8116 B / 2 UAS 5504 B The vinyl is in Excellent condition with just a number of very faint paper lines. There is nothing affecting play. The labels are spotless. with no stickers, writing, scuffs or stains. There are a couple of very faint spindle marks on each side. The outer rim is flat. Sorry about the out of focus photo, I'll upoad a beter one tomorrow The textured (on the outside) gatefold cover, printed by the E. J. Day Group, is in Near Mint condition. There are no tears, stains, shelf wear, creases, stickers or writing. The spine is perfect. The only blemish I can find is a faint impression left by a price sticker on the front near the top right hand corner. The windowed poly-lined white inner sleeve just has the usual faint browning / ageing to the edges and a few creases, There is a date code 0670 indicating a manufacture date of June 1970. This was probably part of stock built up prior to release in July 1970. , a very desirable copy of a 42 year old record. Comes from a smoke free home. I ship in purpose-made strong cardboard mailers and I'm happy to combine multiple purchases in one parcel to save on shipping costs.
